An exquisite pair of front and back 19th Century Chinese male rank badges, done in the lost silk technique of "kesi", circa 1860-1880.
The motifs in this pair are incredibly ornate, and the badges have a particularly elegant color harmony of dark beige, cream and blue.
This is the Wild Goose, the 4th Civilian rank in the Qing Dynasty.
Not just rare and precious antique textiles, but also a strikingly vivid pair!
(Please check my extraordinay Qing Prince's robe in the Collectibles/Vintage Clothing Category)
MEASUREMENTS: Each. Length: 10 3/4". Width: 9 3/4".
( 27.5 cm) x ( 25 cm)
CONDITION: Very good, with some unraveling of the kesi in a few places as always, particularly in the top left areas. See pics.
However, due to the sophistication of the motifs, this is not very noticeable to the naked eye, and will become nearly visible when the pieces are framed.
The badges may have had a thin border originally, though some kesi badges do not have any.
A dark blue cotton was applied at the back on top of the teal silk later in History, to strengthen the fabric.
Can easily be removed, however this is excellent protection for the pieces in my opinion.
Will be shipped "EXPEDITED" from Paris, (5-7 days) including online tracking, insurance and signature at delivery.
