A fantastic French standing crucifix from the Napoleon III era, circa 1880.
The crucifix was very likely made in the area of the country close to the Black Forest, and is a brown wood, with elaborate brass ornaments at the four ends of the cross, plus one behind the Christ's head.
A small plaque with "Inri" is also applied on top of the Christ.
The cross itself and the Christ are a cast metal and have been gilded with gold paint, as well as the symbols of the passion on each side (the reeds and the ladder) and the hollow part of the base.
A strong contrast between the dark wood and the gilded Christ and ornaments, gives the crucifix a lot of character!
Typical Napoleon III base.
An impressive 19th Century artifact that will bring elegance to any home.
CONDITION: In good condition. The Cross metal part on the right has some damage: splits in the flat part, and a cut to the end of the ornate motif. This is not really noticeable due to the gilt. Crack to the wood base on the side due to age. Not major and not affecting stability. The gilt was restored in the first part of the XXth Century and is fairly vibrant.
