An exceptional French religious engraving with hand watercolor from the time of Voltaire and Rousseau! Circa 1750-1780 (There are 3 pieces from the same provenance that would make a divine set!)
This piece shows Rebecca and Eliezer at the well.
The colors, which are original to the piece, are cobalt blue, red, hunter's green and moss green, and a very light baby blue for the Angel's wings.
The series is from the Bible, First Book of Moses, and the text says in French rhymes: "Fidele Eliezer, d'Isaac serviteur Aupres de Rebecca tu seras l'Ambassadeur" or Faithful Eliezer, Isaac's servant You'll be his Ambassador to Rebecca
"The servant devised a test in order to find the right wife for Isaac. As he stood at the central well in Abraham's birthplace with his men and ten camels laden with goods, he prayed to God:
"Let it be that the maiden to whom I shall say, 'Please tip over your jug so I may drink,' and who replies, 'Drink, and I will even water your camels,' her will You have designated for Your servant, for Isaac" (Genesis 24:14).
To his surprise, a young girl immediately came out and offered to draw water for him to drink, as well as water to fill the troughs for all his camels. "
The piece is rare, beautiful. and after years of browsing for antique prints, I can say absolutely exceptional.
CONDITION: In very good condition with normal darkening of the engraving paper and substantial foxing due to age. Colors are particularly fresh.
The piece has a very delicate matting in the Louis XV style, going back to the 1900s-1920s. It is really delightful and if not kept, should in my opinion serve as a model for a newer mat, as it suits the artwork perfectly.
