This portrait of a French actress, Marguerite Duval, was published in "Le Rire" one of these late 19th C French magazines, who were asking the most famous artists of the time to create original artworks for their publications.
The artwork is dated 1899.
The piece is by Leonetto Cappiello, (1875-1944) a world famous illustrator who has left us the most striking Art Nouveau posters (Cinzano, Campari, etc..)
His works are in Musee d'Orsay, Le Louvre, and the MOMA in New York, to name a few.
Somewhat caricatural, somewhat risque, Cappiello was an artist of the extreme! This portrait is strongly Art Nouveau, with a cabaret feel and colors a la Toulouse Lautrec.
Though done on thin paper, the piece is an original artwork, signed in the plate by Cappiello on the upper right corner. The name Cappiello also appears as a caption under the image.
A very rare piece with A LOT of character, which will bring Art Nouveau chic to any decor!
You may want to also consider my other Cappiello piece item # 3041pnt (See Pic) The 2 pieces form a rare and totally stunning pair!
