A rare 19th C French Art Nouveau figurative panel, fairly large,
showing a knight riding his horse and a colt , against a castle on a hill in the background.
The artwork is hand-carved from an oak piece very likely, as it is heavy, and was part of Henri II furniture,
also called "neo-Renaissance", quite in vogue in the 1890s.
As a matter of fact, Art Nouveau being enamored with the Middle Ages
( see my painting # 34190pnt )
and the Henri II style being more Renaissance, there is an artful blend of both influences in the piece:
The castle is obviously medieval, also set among typical Art Nouveau trees,
while the knight's hairpiece is Renaissance.
The character and the 2 animals are beautifully rendered, in very high relief, and the scene is quite lively.
The piece has a lot of character and will bring prestige and originality to any decor!
CONDITION:
In very good condition.
Chips to the colt nose and mane. Not very noticeable.
Also 4 vertical cracks in the colt body and the terrain below. They do not affect the strength of the piece.
