SYMBOLIST paintings rarely surface and this stunning piece is worthy of any sophisticate collection.
An Art movement of the very end of the 19th Century, it was brief and therefore production is scarce,
An oil painted on wood, the artwork depicts a seascape at moonlight.
Mysterious, "fantasmatic", it has both a typical Symbolist subject: moonlight, and its unique atmosphere.
( I enclose 2 pics of paintings by famous Symbolist artists: Alphonse Osbert and Jean Delville as a comparison.)
The colors in the piece are fantastic, a harmony of greens and teals with very dark foliage against them, as an absolute contrast.
Close to abstraction, the artwork is more evocative of a metaphysical dimension of nature, than the School of Barbizon for instance.
Framed with a vintage (1950s) wooden frame.
This work has a label at the back with the name "J Molie".
At a time when artists were not signing their works as often as today, these labels were attached during Art shows and this one, obviously contemporary to the piece, seems perfectly authentic.
A turn of the Century French treasure that will bring antique refinement to any decor!
Both artwork and frame are in very good condition.
