From the Edwardian times, circa 1900-1905, a delightful naturalistic French painting, showing a woman by a lake, reading a love letter.
The scene, done after J.B. Corot, though in a more vibrant color palette, places a diminutive character under very tall trees and overcast skies, on a river bank with still waters in the distance.
It is signed "A. Monic" in the lower left corner.
This is an oil on canvas.
The lush lake vegetation, the old trees, the weather and the overall quality of light, all point to a woody area near Paris.
The young woman reading a love letter is a favorite theme of the time, and I had a lovely Art Nouveau statue recently with the same subject.
But here the painter has insisted on the mystery of the scene: a content we will never know, an emotion we will never feel, and a character only half seen under the trees
definitely giving nature the main role in the painting,
nature which is neither hostile nor decorative, like in earlier Centuries, but powerful and majestic.
A strong piece with style, sensitivity and beauty, to keep very preciously.
