A very rare and totally unique oil painting from WWII (1938-1945) in the Norman Rockwell style, done by a Nice painter of the time.
Nice was in the "Free Zone" during the War and could function more or less normally, while the North of the country was under direct German rule.
Matisse was in Nice at the time.
The scene represents a mind boggling psychic reading, complete with tarot cards, a flower pot and a cat.
The psychic is an elderly lady, painted to perfection! totally absorbed by her cards,
while the pretty lady in green to the left, gazes in the distance, waiting for the final results.
The psychic's cat, a white animal with hyper-realistic fur, sleeps on his favorite velvet pillow.
Besides the spectacular brass pot in the foreground, the scene also has interesting furniture and trinkets: a 1920s table scarf with a long fringe, an Art Deco plaster nude, a Russian candy jar, and a small painting of Algiers or Morocco on the wall.
This is so intensely real. Like a television scene before television!
The painting is an oil on canvas, and it is signed: "Alex Jorio" in the lower left corner.
This amazing artwork will bring the most stunning hyper-realistic effect to any decor!
Length: 23". Width: 17 3/4".
