An extraordinary, one could easily say "divine"! French lace piece done for a church altar, circa 1880-1900.
This is the ultimate Art and refinement in hand-made lace, with nearly every area done in a slightly different stitch.
Except for the Italian Renaissance, it would be difficult to find anything more precious.
There is a cross in the middle of the piece, surrounded by streamlined roses.
The prickly leaves hint to the crown of thorns.
The floral motifs towards the edges are more free-formed, though there seems to be tulips and irises.
The thread used for the lace is the finest, allowing for the most minute details and artistic fantasies, including this amazing scalloped border literally conceived like a lace sculpture.
Hard to tell how long this masterpiece took to complete. Time obviously did not count!
