This is an authentic 1920s German Art Nouveau woodcut by J.J.V.CISSARZ called "TRAUER" (Grief, sadness)
Johannes Joseph Vincenz Cissarz (Danzig 1873 - 1942 Frankfurt am Main) was a German painter, Graphic Artist and Interior Designer, who studied in Dresden.
He was a member of the famous Artists' Colonie in Darmstadt until 1906. See the excellent Wikipedia article: "Darmstadt Artists' Colony" where Cissarz is mentioned as designing the "Blue House" in 1904.
"TRAUER" is a small piece, but very rare, as it was very likely published directly by the artist at the time, meaning in a very small edition.
His works, beautiful nudes, or women by the Northern beaches rarely surface.
A minimalist artwork, with the most sober tones ( a subdued purple, gray and brown) "TRAUER" is incredibly powerful!
If you look long enough at the woman slumping with grief in front of her window facing the Northern Sea, you can only feel the intensity of her sorrow.
A Fisherman's wife or mother, she had been waiting for them at the same window for all these years, and then one day possibly they never returned.
An absolute treasure!
