I had this delightful medal in the store earlier this year, and was thrilled to find another one. It is signed Alphee Dubois (1831-1905), a listed French artist.
Though Alphee's creation was minted again in silver in 1926, this bronze mint is earlier, and probably from the artist's lifetime, circa 1900-1905.
The piece represents 2 beautiful ladies in flowing Greek dresses on one side, and wreaths of wheat and grapes with a plaque on the other side.
Both sides are as beautiful as each other! The artist was a "Prix de Rome" (the highest distinction in European Art) and you can tell from the elegance and precision of his work.
This is of course a symbolic gathering. The lady on the left is Science, and the lady on the right who just harvested wheat in a field, is Work.
The combination of Work and Science (or agriculture engineering) creates the best conditions for food abundance and prosperity.
A top artwork beautifully engraved, and which will bring prestige to any collection.
(Please check my other antique French medals. They're all fantastic!)
