Published in the French "La Revue Illustree" in the 1890s, this is a lithograph by Jan Van Beers (1852-1927) a listed Belgian artist, signed in the plate, and showing a Cabaret lady in a naughty Columbine costume!

Jan Van Beers also called "The Younger" (as his father was a famous poet) has works in major Museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

La Revue Illustree was a luxury Art & Literature publication of the time, and existed roughly between 1880 and 1900.

The Art pages were also printed luxuriously, and this lithograph has high quality colors on thick paper, with no text at the back.

You will notice the harmony of yellow and black, typical of the era, which you find in Steinlen's "Chat Noir" for instance.

These were the highly contrasted colors of the Cabaret culture at the turn of the Century, the colors of French Cancan, Le Moulin Rouge and the Chat Noir, a time of wealth, fun and extravagance, before the Continent fatally plunged into WWI.

The naughty Columbine wears the small pointed hat ubiquitous at the time, a tight corset, a dress with a generous low cut, and what looks like tiered black swan ruffles.

She smiles at us, bewitchingly holding a mask in her gloved hand, the other glove having fallen on the floor, maybe hinting to more item falling in the imminent future.

She wears embroidered black stockings with cute pumps.

Her Columbine collar made of swan feathers is generous too, but not able to cover the low cut, which was to be expected.

A whimsical 19th Century Belgian artwork, with wit and poetry, very likely created by Van Beers for La Revue, and to keep very preciously.

CONDITION: In very good condition with some folding marks in the center and in one corner, that really show at the back, but very little at the front.

Slight traces of binding along the left edge. Not noticeable. There has been some trimming of the bottom edge, I would say 1/4" (1/2 cm) to remove a word written there. Not a major loss, as the piece speaks for itself!

MEASUREMENTS: Length: 11 5/8". Width: 8 3/4" ( 29.5 cm) by ( 22 cm)

Will be shipped "Registered" from Paris including online tracking (US, Canada, Europe) insurance and signature at delivery.
