A powerful and realistic French carving circa 1800-10, representing a Napoleonic eagle wearing a crown.
The French Empire bird is represented sideways, with sturdy legs centrally positioned.
Although Napoleon III used the eagle as his Imperial symbol and his reign only happened 40 years after his uncle,
the extreme outline of the wings on top, the long neck, and the cameos on the crown, are all Napoleon's style.
The carving is also older than the mid 19th Century.
The piece may have been an architectural element, in a noble house or an official building.
Though not huge, the artwork has a lot of historical intensity!
The eagle displays majesty and regal power, and is beautifully hand carved with a wealth of details. in a medium dark wood which has acquired a superb patina with time.
He is carved against a natural background of plants and flowers.
This VERY rare artifact can be added to a piece of furniture for extra character, or can be displayed as a sculpture.
