This is Johann Nepomuk Ender (1793-1854) a world famous Austrian artist with works in major Museums.
I had his "Apollo" a few years ago, and have been looking for a piece by him ever since. His male nudes are about the most handsome in the Century in my opinion!
This piece (engraved by Stöber) is an early piece, 1820s I would say, Neo-Classicist with some definite French Empire touch.
Ender is mostly famous for his royalty portraits, which have the sharpest realism, and are absolutely magnificent.
But there are many mythological themes like this one in his early career, his engravings being sold it seems in several European countries at the same time.
The piece shows a young man, trying to protect another with his body, as a Greek God on the left (Apollo) is trying to pierce him with his arrows.
This is the story of the Aloides, Otos and Ephialtes, 2 handsome giants who were also twin brothers, and seem to have created a lot of trouble on Mount Olympus. Having tried to kidnap Artemis, they were punished by Apollo.
A sophisticated piece with stunning beauty that will bring prestige to any decor!
