From the earliest Grandville edition of "Fleurs Animees" (De Gonet edition) this is an authentic 19th Century engraving, (not a reproduction) with its original hand watercolor, signed Grandville in the plate, in the lower left corner.
BELLE DE NUIT Literally "Night Belle" is a whimsical scene with a very interesting central character, not a typical Victorian woman wearing a long dress like in most "Fleurs Animees", but a kind of Shakespearean creature, part young boy, part young girl, part elf, with the most exquisite features.
Belle de Nuit has the tiniest feet, lovely vine like ringlets and wears a blue morning glory flower as a hat.
In the background are 2 other belles in pink.
On the side is another creature of the night, a butterfly or moth.
An exquisite piece to keep very preciously. as the original Grandville "Fleurs Animees" are disappearing fast!
(Please check my other Grandville, I currently have a lovely collection)
MEASUREMENTS: Length: 10 1/4". Width: 6 5/8".
(26 cm) by ( 16.75 cm)
CONDITION: In good condition with the usual darker edges. Little foxing in this piece, but colors are not very strong.
However, I advise leaving the original Grandville colors as they are. Retouching them can be disastrous, and also removes any value to the artworks. The piece used to have a protective tissue, which has left a very faint line in the left margin.
There are 2 Grandville editions in the mid 19th Century, which are considered the original editions: The 1847 one by G. De Gonet, and the 1867 one by Garnier Freres.
Will be shipped"Priority" including insurance to the US, and "Registered Airmail" internationally with signature at delivery.
