Everyone knows Emile Antoine Bayard (1837-1891) for his portrait of Cosette in "Les Miserables"! (See pic)
Emile Bayard was a French illustrator, who worked for books and magazines, and besides Hugo's work, also illustrated "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and the science fiction author, Jules Vernes.
The piece shows Figaro, the eloquent Italian character in Mozart's Opera, in a magnificent costume, all hand watercolored.
The colors are original to the 19th C piece, and are particularly strong and vibrant.
There is beauty and elegance to the character's portrait, and enough personality to make it quite memorable. Just like Cosette!
The piece is signed Emile Bayard in the plate and was engraved by Gervais. The quality is excellent, with the image sharper than most.
