A stunning nude by a renowned 19th C French artist: Auguste Barthelemy Glaize (1807-1893).
(horizontal shadow not in the piece)
Glaize was Achille Deveria's student. I happen to have several pieces by Deveria in my Fine Art/Antique category, that you may want to check to see their continuity in style.
Glaize is a listed artist with works in major Museums like Musee d'Orsay, the Chicago Art Institute, the LA county Museum, etc.
His son Pierre-Paul-Leon Glaize also became a major painter after him.
You will find paintings by Auguste Glaize on artnet, also in Google images. They are breathtaking!
The piece, circa 1860, shows 2 young people in love in the Antiquity. They are in the woods, by a small brook.
The engraving plays on the contrast of dark forest white bodies, creating an illumination of the nude which really dazzles you.
This is of course 19th C Academic Art, but it has incredible beauty and sensitivity.
The poet Baudelaire praised Glaize for his rendering of femininity. No wonder!
A small masterpiece to keep very preciously.
