A powerful nude a la Picasso, with vigor, beauty and style, done by a French woman artist: Laure Malcles-Masereel (1911-1981)
The piece comes from a sketchbook of 10 original nudes by the artist, all signed with the initials "LM", numbered and dated.
This drawing has the number "9" and was done on May 13 1944.
This is one of the most stunning pieces in the whole book in my opinion.
The model is superb, a brunette with exquisite WWII movie star features.
The pose is sculptural, with a strong Cubist influence.
However, if the body is sketched with powerful Modernist strokes, the face has realistic features which reveal the model's genuine beauty.
This is an early piece by Laure Malcles who lived in Avignon, and later married the famous Belgian artist and illustrator Frans Masereel.
Both Frans and Laure who met in 1941, may actually have shared this model, as I believe I recognize her in some of Frans Masereel's nudes.
A stunning Modernist original, genuine and generous, that will bring elegance to any decor!
