I could not resist this delightful late French Empire scene circa 1820, showing a famous Middle Ages Queen: Marguerite de Bourgogne, with 2 other lovely ladies.
The scene is an engraving, and beautifully hand watercolored. Colors are original to the piece.
Nothing in the scene is historically accurate, as Marguerite has the beautiful Greek profile they liked at the turn of the 19th Century, and lies on a French Empire sofa!
But this what makes the scene so endearing. It is more a dream about History than anything, and more about showing 3 lovely ladies talking together in leisurely poses.
As a matter of fact, the real historical background is a 1314 Court intrigue , the "Tour de Nesles Affair", where 3 daughters in law of the King of France, including Marguerite, were caught in a (sex) scandal.
One can see why there is such a touch of eroticism to the piece!
The artwork is signed: "Bourdet" for Jules Joseph Guillaume Bourdet (1799-1869) a listed artist reaching high prices at auctions, and "Pardinel" for the engraver.
A small treasure of the past to keep very preciously!
MEASUREMENTS: Length: 9 1/2". Width: 6 1/4".
( 24 cm) by ( 16 cm)
CONDITION: In good condition. Upper edge has slight damage. Darkening of the paper in the margins, hardly any in the image. Colors are VERY vibrant for a piece this age.
The piece is applied on board, and though this is a 200 year old board, so really dark, I advise to leave the piece as it is, as the artwork could not survive removing it from the board. Likewise, I would not trim the upper edge, as it will be covered by the framing.
Will be shipped "Registered" from Paris, under thick layers of cardboard, including insurance and signature at delivery.
