Signed Francois Chifflard (1825-1901) in the plate, this is an amazing Art Nouveau composition with nudes, dated 1875, by a listed 19th Century French artist with works in Museums, including Le Louvre.
The print, which is very large for the time, is called "L'Ete" (Summer) and it both an ode to nature and a celebration of the body, finally free to express itself in the warm weather.
There are 2 fantastic female nudes in the foreground, a magnificent woman seen from the back like in an ancient painting,
and a truly breathtaking central character, who illuminates the whole piece with her surreal presence.
This nude, the spirit of Summer, is a genuine "Symbolist" creation. Symbolism, a poetic trend within the Art Nouveau era, emphasized the dream quality and mystery of things, and no doubt Summer with her totally ethereal body, qualifies as a Symbolist representation.
The piece has more characters:
a group of lovely putti who enjoy the ideal temperature and play together,
but also 2 more beings in the woods, a Faun on the right who seems to be watching Summer, and what looks like a young man, with a strong Art Nouveau profile, in a leisurely Roman pose.
The piece which is a steel engraving done by Martin, comes in its original folio, and is covered by a protective sheet of paper.
An amazing artwork, which will bring beauty and prestige to any decor.
