This is the most beautiful antique Chinese embroidery I have found in a long time!
A wedding piece from the Qing Dynasty, circa 1880, it is fairly large for the time, and all hand embroidered with delicate satin stitch on a dark orange satin silk.
The embroideries are elegant Chinese motifs, and just fabulous!
The stitch is so minute and the embroidery so compact, it makes the softest satin surfaces.
The central subjects are flowers in decorative porcelain vases, with butterflies flying all around.
A lot of curled ribbons everywhere give a festive spirit to the piece.
These ribbons seem to wrap up gifts of all sorts in all four corners: furniture, (a low table with 2 stools upper right) rolled sleeping mats, (upper left) a wedding chest, (lower left)
and a wooden item in a sheath, possibly a music instrument (lower right)
Meaning very likely the embroidery was one of many gifts given by the same family, and would remain as a detailed memory of the event, just like a wedding video today!
The floral border is original to the piece and in the traditional blue navy and black colors of the Qing Dynasty.
CONDITION: In very good condition for its age and material.
Various discolorations (like blue dye from the border for instance) as always with antique silk, but remarkably, no fraying in the whole orange silk, some in the blue border in one area. (see pic)
The ultra thin lining has not survived, as always.
ADVICE FOR DISPLAY: The piece was a wall hanging at some point, but I do not recommend hanging it again, as it will pull on the fibers.
I also do not recommend any dry cleaning as chemicals could ruin the piece.
The piece can still be displayed flat for some time, though not in an area that has a lot of light, and then, you may want to frame it.
Once framed it should survive another Century, but again not in sunlight or in a lot of daylight.
