RESERVED Antique 19th CHINESE Qing Dragon Robe For Baby Prince Very RARE!
Found in Paris, this is an authentic 19th Century dragon robe for a baby prince of the Qing Dynasty, absolutely remarkable for its color: a green with a lot of yellow in it, which identifies the wearer as being fairly close in line to the Emperor.
The dragon has four claws, which is consistent with a prince of the first ranks.
The piece is not a garment that was cut out of a larger one.
The motif has been caught somewhat in the side seams, but the size of the dragon and the phoenix, who are facing each other, and the space occupied by the motif, would have been too small for an adult robe.
You will also notice that this is a baby dragon. Happy and playful, and not the scary adult type.
It was therefore embroidered specifically for this toddler's piece.
The ocean stripes are also shorter than in adult garments, but this was obviously measured to allow (on 12 1/2") the full frontal display of the dragon motif.
All the sewing and mounting are original to the piece.
No attempt has been made at restoration, and the robe, which was cut to fit a baby's arms, is exactly in its original state.
The embroidery is lavish! Extremely detailed, with a very upbeat profusion of flowers and clouds.
The harmony of colors is of course totally unusual as this background color is so rare. You have of course the Qing blue, but also ocher, cream, a muted vermilion and a burgundy, a cobalt blue, teal, moss green and black.
This is mostly satin stitch, with minimal couched gold for the dragon and phoenix. But a satin stitch of higher quality than usual, as the satin thread is far thicker than average, while remaining very luscious.
Luscious is also the word that applies to the background silk, a thick satin, and not the dryer quality of many Court robes.
CONDITION: In very good condition. Could hardly be better!
The front and back have no damage. No stains either. Just rare loose threads. No fraying of the satin so far. Couched gold still very vibrant with a beautiful warm tone. Embroidered blue trims in very good condition too, with minimal wear. Mostly the bottom part of the sleeves. Cream collar in very good condition. Normal, minor unstitching of seams. However, as always, the black silk trims, which were worked in bias, show a lot of wear. In case of restoration, this would be the easiest part to replace, as black silk can still be easily found today.
MEASUREMENTS Length: 12 1/2". Width including sleeves: 13". (cm). (cm)
The piece will be shipped Expedited Airmail from Paris including insurance and signature at delivery.
