An oil on paper, this is a fabulous French landscape painting from the late 30s, showing a peaceful river scene in the Summertime.
The piece is in the Modernist manner, semi-abstract, but still with some realism in it, and as is immediately obvious, it has A LOT of character and poetic sensitivity!
This is a landscape in the vicinity to Paris, probably the Northern area close to Normandy. The river may be Oise.
There is what looks like a bridge in the distance, and a boat on the river, though it is just a few touches of color in the green of the water.
I purchased this unsigned piece from the estate of Robert Peltier (1913 -1996) Robert Peltier, a high quality artist of the time, together with his wife Odette Peltier were known in the 1940s and 1950s for their fantastic posters. Most were for large department stores like Galeries Lafayette, and were therefore all over the place.
(this was also the time of the famous Gruau)
I will be listing one of Robert's original watercolors for Le Louvre department stores from the same estate, also a stunning creation.
The colors in this oil are to die for: a harmony of green, cream, violet and burgundy with a touch of rust.
Robert and Odette Peltier were artists who reigned over style in their time and had absolutely superb taste!
The piece is incredibly refined and will bring elegance and poetry to any decor.
