Done after a Rubens painting, this is an outstanding French print from the mid 19th Century, showing a Dutch Renaissance lady wearing a magnificent dress.
The piece is signed "H. Pauguet", a famous engraver of the time.
The print is all embellished with hand watercolor and colors have retained all their freshness.
The artwork is beautiful and elegant, and due to the superior rendering of this major artist, the portrait is quite realistic and striking.
The dress is gorgeous! Not as lavishly ornate as an Italian Renaissance outfit
(please see my other 19th C French print showing a Renaissance noble woman, item 1873PNT )
but within the moral constraints of the Netherlands right after the Reform, which demanded sobriety in garments, still spectacular!
The colors in the piece are a rare contrast of black and lemon yellow, with a touch of ruby for the jewels.
Helene Fourment, the lady portrayed in the piece, was Rubens' second wife.
The 19th Century loved portraying famous ladies of the past.
it is always a treat to reconstruct these antique portrait galleries with a small collection of these (still affordable) watercolored prints.
