Published in a first confidential edition of 175 in 1900, then, from the same plates, in the 1927-1928 Winter issue of "Le Grand Guignol" "LUST" (La Luxure) is one of the most striking artworks in Detouche's "7 Deadly Sins" series.
Henry Detouche (1854-1913) is a listed French artist with works in major Museums.
This printing on thick cream paper is from the second edition, and has its original hand watercolor embellishments.
Obviously influenced by Grandville, earlier in the Century, but also strongly Art Nouveau in style and in the rendering of nature,
the "7 Deadly Sins" portfolio of color lithographs is a series of ladies portraits, many of them lovely nudes.
Each lithograph is signed in the plate by the artist.
Original poems by famous authors of the time, also appear at the back of several prints, like for this one which has "Envy" at the back.
"LUST" is a very mysterious work at first.
A nude woman is seen from the back, while 3 young monkeys are playing in a tree.
We do not see her face, and would have no way to understand any relationship between the characters.
we discover that the young lady is actually sitting on another monkey, but one that has been so thoroughly used, he has become a rug!
Set in a typical Art Nouveau decor of purple irises and foliage, the piece is poetic, but also completely wild and of course unforgettable!
A rare artwork which will bring Art Nouveau wit and beauty to any decor.
You may want to check out my other pieces by the same artist: "SLOTH" and "ENVY".
