From the French review "Le Monde Illustre", and signed "Linton", this is a fantastic view of Beijing in 1867, and what is called the "Circular Street", showing, with an incredible wealth of details, life in the city in the mid 19th Century.
If you are like me, now that we all know how advanced China can be in our Century! it is a treat to discover these antique depictions of China by Westerners, especially if they are, like this one, more realistic than biased.
The scene was engraved after a watercolor by Edward Hildebrandt,(1818-1868) a German artist, who painted impressive scenes while on a world Tour. His works were gathered under the title "Journey Around the Earth". ("Reise Um Die Erde") and seem to have been quite famous all over Europe at the time. (You may want to check his Wikipedia page, translated from the German, for more detailed info.)
What this street view shows us, is how Chinese stores were set up at the time, their fronts and advertising banners.
The circular view of these Beijing businesses with their extra tall entrances, even taller pillars, some with sculptures, flags or lanterns, is absolutely stunning.
To the left, one of the famous Beijing walls towers, which have since disappeared.
The Circular Street seems to have been already paved, but the limits between sidewalk and street were still quite blurry, with people sitting in the middle of the way, and large stones everywhere.
Horse carts still had wooden wheels, men still had queues and there seems to have been gatherings everywhere to play games or to gamble.
A stunning piece, with style and artistic qualities, that will bring character to any decor.
