A set of twelve French figural knife rests in the form of sea nymphs. I recently brought back six sets of knife rests and this set is my favorite. Beautiful soft warm patina.
Through the centuries knife rests have been made from many materials, including silver, silverplate, porcelain, mother of pearl, ivory, pottery, horn, and combinations of these materials. In the 19th Century both the French and English Victorians raised dining to new heights and table settings were included. Knife rests, place card holders, napkin rings, candlesticks, and elaborate centerpieces graced dining tables during the 19th Century into the early Edwardian years.
French, silver plate (no markings found) late 19th. Century
Condition report; Very Good
