Antique Fox Hunting Whip or Crop English Silver Collar 1904
An antique English fox hunting whip from the Edwardian Era. Beautiful horn handle, sterling silver collar, and braided shaft with open keeper. The collar is hallmarked for the year 1904. The braided shaft I feel is covered in braided linen or hemp which has been stained a dark color. Braided and covered stocks or shafts offer a better grip in wet weather than the cane shafts. Overall very good condition considering the age of the whip or riding crop. Perfect gift for the equestrian in your life.
English, collar marked for .950 sterling silver as denoted by the Lion Passant, Assay town of London Leopard’s face, date letter “I” for 1904, and maker’s mark C.C. It is also stamped for Brigg which was one of England’s finest manufacture of umbrellas, walking sticks and hunting crops. Thomas Brigg and Son’s was established in 1836. The company later joined Swaine Adeney in 1943.
Measurements; handle 5 ½ wide, from top of silver collar to end of whip is 21”, the open keeper measures 5” in length.
Condition; Overall very good, several dents in silver collar which are normal for a whip of this age. Leather open keeper shows normal wear and a few cracks in leather, two small areas of wear to the the braided shaft (these should cover nicely with leather conditioner)
