This is a classic example of a stylish Victorian Brooch. Black Enamel with leaf embellishments and a Seed Pearl in a Star. They just couldn't stop themselves. Also, typical of the times is that the brooch is black to be respectful of the loss to Queen Victoria of her husband Albert.
But what makes this brooch even more special is the sentimental inscription that surrounds the beautiful glass lens for keeping hair or a picture. It says: "To M. Sharp from her fellow work girls Johnstone 1 September 1880". One can only imagine the emotion that was tied to this piece. I just love sentimental inscriptions on jewelry.
The Brooch is 10.5 grams in weight and 1 1/4" in diameter. It has a "T" bar and a "C" clasp. In excellent Estate condition.
