This very dramatic and commanding collar from the 1980s consists of a series of bronze-tone bands stacked one on top of the next. At the center is a beautiful medallion of a genuine 500 Lira bimetallic Italian coin in a geometric polished gold-tone setting.
The curved bands of the collar are rigid, so the necklace always keeps its beautiful shape. The stacked bands are 1" wide in front, and come together in a 1/4" diameter circle at the back, where they are capped with heavy silver-tone end caps. The center medallion is 1-3/8" by 1-5/8". The inside diameter of the collar is about 4-5/8".
The 500 Lira coin was designed in 1982 by sculptor Laura Cretara and consists of a bronze center in a steel ring. Italian coins were last minted in 1999, in anticipation of the euro becoming the legal tender coin of the EU. The 500 lira coin was the first bimetallic coin produced for circulation.
This outstanding piece is in excellent vintage condition and is very comfortable to wear.
