I am offering for your consideration, a beautiful banded agate Victorian brooch. The brooch is 1" x 1 1/2", and designed with a tubular hinge and a C clasp. The hinge style dates the piece to pre 1880.
The brooch is set with 2 polished banded agates, each having different patterned bands. The frame of the brooch is tubular, which makes it lightweight. Each of the agates is set in a frame; the frames are pressed into the tubular oval frame.
The sides of the agate settings have old solder marks. As you can see from the pictures, the frames in which they are set exhibit irregularity of shape which can be seen on the back side of the brooch. The agate with the horizontal stripes has a 1/8" sliver chip just across the top, removing a portion of the polished element. Noticeable only under magnification, is a slight crack radiating toward the center and 2 other cracks radiating toward the frame. As with many gold filled pieces of this age, there are losses of the gold finish, throughout.
