This is a remarkable butter pat the likes of which you will probably not see again. It is in the shape of a shell and has inside a painted nautical scene with a man, boats, and seagulls. This "picture within a picture" is from the Aesthetic Period--1879-1890. On the underside, the butter pat looks exactly like a shell. The longest dimension is 3 inches, and the pat has no damage of any kind. This would be a wonderful addition to a collection.
