Striking multicolored seaweed and sea creatures are hand painted on this 6 well round antique oyster plate by UPW (Union Porcelain Works) of Greenpoint, New York. This company made the first oyster plates in the United States. They were sought after at the time and have remained desirable because of their three dimensional naturalistic decoration. Round UPW oyster plates are not easy to find. The very appealing color palette starts with a forest green near the center sauce well, as the seaweed between the wells moves toward the rim includes light green, aqua, pale yellow, gray, apricot and cream. Two crabs in dark orange accent the plate. There is gilding around the center well and two bands of gilding around the exterior rim. On the back of the plate is "U.P.W." and the logo for the company (a bird with an S in its beak). There is also an impressed mark. The plate is in excellent condition - no chips, hairlines, or repairs. Also the gilding is in fine condition. This would make a fine addition to an oyster plate collection or for a special display. The diameter is 9.5 inches.
