This antique French Limoges oyster plate was made by Haviland in the Aesthetic Period, 1870-1890. We see the hallmarks of this period in the oyster plate design: asymmetry and naturalristic elements. Hand painted fish in various sizes swim across the oyster plate. Sprigs of flowers are along the perimeter. The oyster plate has a "turkey" form sculpted in white-with the "head" facing left and the "tail feathers" at the right. The oyster plate is in excellent condition- no chips, hairlines, or repairs. There is very minimal wear to the border gilding. There is a wonderful color palette -deep red, gold, wine, browns, dark green, and yellow. The gilding is especially well done in the scales of all the fish; there are also gilt highlights on the flowers and leaves. The diameter is just over 8.5 inches. The mark on the back dates the plate to the period 1876-1889. We see "H & Co. " over "L" in green-also, HAVILAND & CO. LIMOGES" in a red circle on the reverse of the plate. The mold for this plate can be seen on page 61 of the book "Collecting Oyster Plates" by Jeffrey Snyder .
We are offering a companion oyster plate with hand painted swimming fish in a variation by the artist .The pair of plates would handsomely anchor a mantel, shelf or wall display.
