Haviland and Company made this oyster plate between 1876 and 1886 (dated according to the green marks on the back). The hand painting on this plate is remarkable. Using a color palette of green, wine, gray, yellow, brown, blue, turquoise, black, coral, and other subtle shadings, the artist has brought to life an undersea world. There are even tiny fish swimming in the background. There is a variety of seaweed and sea plants including tiny filaments which appear in a couple of the oyster wells and in the area behind the "turkey." The border is gilded, which adds an extra layer of luster to the plate. The diameter is 8.75 inches. This oyster plate must have been a cabinet piece as it is in beautiful condition. On page 63 of the book, "Collecting Oyster Plates", by Jeffrey Snyder there is a plate with this mold similar in style to this one. We have a complimentary oyster plate listed in case you want two plates to anchor a wall, shelf, mantel, or display.
