What to call the background color of this gorgeous French Haviland Limoges turkey oyster plate? Claret? Ruby? Color is in the eye of the beholder. There are 5 oyster wells with cafe au lait markings. The same cafe au lait is paired with a rich deep brown to form the "turkey head" to the left and the "turkey feathers" to the right. The form for this oyster plate was designed for President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1880 and soon after that year interpreted in various color combinations. Only after the design was created was the "turkey" label attached.
This oyster plate has scallops and pleats around the edge and is finished with gilding. Delicate gilt branches accent the background. On the back of the plate is the "H & Co." mark in double underline in green underglaze. There is also a ring inside which is "Haviland & Co. Limoges." The condition of this oyster plate is remarkable. The gilt is in beautiful condition. The bottom rim is in pristine condition. There no chips, hairlines or repairs. The diameter of the plate is 8.5 inches. The last picture shows this plate flanked by two listed plates opturktiffany and opcascenes which can be seen individually by using the names.
