The lavender tones on this plate, in fact, any shade of purple, is rare in oyster plates. This French Limoges plate has 5 wells, washed with lavender, and decorated with a cluster of white flowers in each well. The accent gilt around the perimeter, and also around the center well, is in excellent condition, as is the whole plate-no flaws. The diameter is 9 inches. Marks on the reverse show the "CFH" mark for Charles Field Haviland in partnership from 1881 until 1890 with Gerard, Dufraisseux and Morel, "GDM". This plate has what is referred to as the "wave design", as the wells, with their double rows of ridges. look like cresting waves. A number of examples of this "wave design" appear on pages 79-81 of the reference book, "Collecting Oyster Plates", by Jeffrey Snyder.
Among the oyster plates we are offering are other "wave designs"--one with an exotic pink sea flower in the center, a second sky blue plate with gilt border, a third with 3 large wispy pieces of seaweed --all by Charles Field Haviland partnering with Gerard, Dufraisseix and Morel..
