"Striking" is the word to describe this antique continental five well oyster plate. The background color is a wonderful shade of Persian red with deeper red flowers as well as blue and brown flowers and leafy branches in blue and brown. Punctuating this rich background are four dramatic designs with stylized decorations. The oyster wells and sauce well are bordered with pink. There is gilding between the wells on a pebbles ground and also gilding around the edge. The gilt shows some wear and there is a bit of wear to the border paint. There are no chips, hairlines, or repairs. The diameter is 8.5 inches. A plate with the same mold and the same rich color palette is found and with a picture of the "beehive" mark is found on page 82 of the reference book Collecting Oyster Plates by Jeffrey Snyder. The maker is identified as Royal Porcelain Manufactory, Vienna, Austria, circa 1860-1864.
