Quimper made some delightful oyster plates and this is certainly one of them. This oyster plate is a fine example of French faience (tin glazed earthenware) or majolica. It is 9.75 inches in diameter and 1.5 inches tall, so it is quite large. The wells are particularly deep. The decoration is most pleasing-- especially the charming Bretonne woman in traditional costume in one of the wells. The plate is in outstanding condition. A quite similar plate is pictured on page 44 of the book Collecting Oyster Plates by Snyder. This is one of the more difficult Quimper oyster plates to find.
