Offered is a large clam shell shaped 6 well oyster plate by UPW (Union Porcelain Works), the first company in the U.S. to make oyster plates. These plates have always been sought-after because of the nautical three dimensional decorations accenting the plates. These are hand painted, with the result that no two plates are ever quite the same. This plate is 10.25 inches long and 7.75 inches wide. It is in excellent condition, with no flaws, and has on the back the maker's mark and a patent number. The color combination of a silvery gray and pink is a rare find. The blank for this oyster plate is pictured on page 28 of the reference book, "Oyster Plates" by Jim & Vivian Karsnitz.. Since each UPW plate was hand painted, there is a great deal of variation in the color palette. Karsnitz shows 3 color variations..Our other trusted reference book, "Collecting Oyster Plates" by Jeffrey B. Snyder, shows still another color variation on page 14.
