The original design for this Haviland Limoges oyster plate was for the Rutherford B. Hayes' White House. Haviland later made similar plates available, in various colors, to the public, without the Presidential Seal, of course. This particular color could probably best be described as claret, though other choices are possible. The plate is 8.5 inches in diameter and in beautiful condition. The mark on the back enables us to date the plate between 1876 and 1889. This exact French plate is pictured on page 70 of the book Collecting Oyster Plates by Snyder.
