This wonderful American sterling child's mug (or cup) was made by Tiffany, and the quality of the work is there for all to see. This mug features niello work, a type of silver treatment which dates from very early times; niello silver has light and dark areas, which allow beautiful pattern contrast. Leaves and scrolls cover the entire mug in a fine light and dark pattern. Note also the handsome decorated handle. The mug is a little over 3 inches tall and 2.5 inches in diameter. The weight is an impressive 5.2 ounces on an accurate postal scale. In the last picture is shown the mark on the bottom. This is the mark Tiffany used between 1875 and 1891, following the tradition of using the initial of the leader of the company when the piece was made--in this case, the initial is "M". The pattern number, "4104", to the left of the "M", dates the original production of the design of this mug to 1875. The inscription, dated December 31, 1879, tells us when the mug was purchased. The mug is in fine condition.
