Here is a wonderful folding knife and fork set, the blades are sterling silver and the handles are heavily engraved mother of pearl. Each is 5.75 inches long when open and 3.5 inches long when closed. Both blades have a full set of English hallmarks: lion for sterling, the head (duty mark), letter mark for date - a J in this case indicating 1858 - and the anchor for Birmingham. The maker's initials AT are also on both pieces (the mark of Alfred Taylor). The work on both the silver and mother of pearl is exquisite. The pair is still in its original box; the indentations make it clear that only these particular pieces fit in the box. The retailer was E. Flower on South Bold Street in Liverpool. What is really remarkable is the date of 1858 for this set. Only rarely do you find such an early date.
