This distinctive French faience plate with soldiers greeting each other was made by Creil circa 1830. The scene in the center has the caption "Enchante d'avoir fait votre connaissance." The English translation is "Happy to have made your acquaince." This plate is called a "story plate," because the scene illustrates the quote below it. Soldiers in full gear greet each other with the countryside in the background. The plate is a wonderful example of polychrome transferware. There are rich colors of deep blue, yellow, brown, gray, green, and deep red. The plate is 8 inches in diameter. On the bottom of the plate is the impressed "Creil" mark. The plate has a tight hairline on the bottom. There are no chips or repairs. Amazingly this plate is almost 200 years old.
