The really early Staffordshire transferware plates are characterized by a rich dark blue not found in later plates-- a color sometimes called "Historical Blue." This is one of those plate. It was made by Clews and dates to the 1820's. The scene depicted on the front is called "Christmas Eve." The diameter is 6.75 inches. We learn from the back that the scene is "From Wilkie's Designs." There were others in the series. There is an impressed mark on the back reading "Clews Warranted Staffordshire." The plate is in amazingly good condition.
