This antique English mulberry transferware Staffordshire plate is in the Canova pattern by Thomas Mayer. The plate was made between 1826 and 1838 in Stoke. Petra Williams' book, Staffordshire, discusses the Canova pattern on page 214. The plate diameter is 10.5 inches. It is beautifully decorated. In the center is a large classical urn set in a lovely landscape. On the border are four cartouches repeating the urn theme, but complemented this time by sailing ships in the background. Separating the cartouches are lush bouquets of full-blown roses. On the back (last picture) is the maker's mark, emphasizing again the classical urn. The plate is in beautiful condition. It obviously has been lovingly treated over the years. As it happens I have a second plate with this same decoration in case anyone wants a pair.
