This large, antique tin once held 5 pounds of Mermaid Brand, Deglet Noor dates that were grown by the Narbonne Ranch in Thermal, California. It measures 5&1/2 inches tall, by 7 inches in diameter. This container was made by the Gates Paper Co, ltd., of Los Angeles. It has a tin top and bottom, with a cardboard center that has a fabulous, glued on paper label that was made by the Union Litho Co., of Los Angeles. The label shows some wear, but there are no tears, or areas where the glue is lifting. The image is of two, beautiful mermaids and surrounding date orchards. I've included a lot of photos to best describe condition. My research shows that the Narbonne Ranch was established around 1870. Research on the container and label makers leads me to date this to the 1910's-20's. The condition of the container is very good. It's perfectly round, with no dents. The tin is fine, with minor oxidation. There is a small spot of surface rust on the original, pry off lid. I haven't cleaned it. A rare piece for your vintage mermaid, advertising, or general store collection.
