This is a fine Jansenist Corpus Christi, showing it's age but not with imperfections like broken toes, fingers. Rather, the carving looks very aged. Discolored with age, I believe this is known as patina. Amazingly, in addition to no breaks, there are no hairline fractures either. This Christ is at least 200 years old. The sculpting in Jansenist form, with the eyes of Christ directed heavenward. The arms do not point straight up, but they ascend pretty high. Doubtless the artist wanted to make this carving beautiful, and the distorted form of straight up arms is not after all aesthetically pleasing; additional feature of the Jansenist works. The large ornate wood and gesso frame, also antique, likely date to end of 1899's; it's a newer addition. It's in too good condition to be as old. There are a couple of places where the gesso has cracked, very minor; but overall the condition of the frame is excellent. An absolutely wonderful crucifix, ready to hang. One of the nicest I've had; and I've had some very nice ones!

Dimensions: The altar piece, or frame, is 25" tall (yes, over 2 feet tall!) and 10" wide. The figure of Christ is 6" long, 4" wide and 0.75" thick. No marks or signatures. Condition good to very good.

A bit on the history of Jansinism: The Jansenist movement originated in the 1600's somewhat in response to Jesuit teaching of free will. The Dutch theologian and Roman Catholic bishop, Cornelius Jansen, emphasized predestination as opposed to the Jesuit teachings of free will. Also a less assuring doctrine, proposing that salvation was indeterminate and impossible without Divine Grace, along with declaring no resistance to Divine Grace could be undertaken by Man. The branch was deemed heretical by Rome, and outlawed in 1712.
