This lovely hallmarked French silver needle case bears the boar's head hallmark for Parisian 800/1000 silver. It measures 2 3/4" in length and still has some needles in it, though how original they are to the case is unknown. The design is fluted or ribbed, like a column, on both sides, and has what looks like ribbons that are crisscrossed, two on the bottom and one on the top. In addition, there are acanthus leaves on both the top and bottom sections, a design extensively found on both Greek and Roman temples and columns which gives this needle case a Neo-Classical look. This style helps to date the needle case, along with the boar's head hallmark, to the late 1800's. The case is in excellent condition with no damage such as dents or splits. The cover goes on easily and does not fall off, holding needles securely. It probably was part of a sewing set sometime in its past history. If you collect antique sewing items, this is a very pretty French silver needle case that would make an excellent addition to your antique or vintage sewing collection
