Johanna Van Ryn was a photographer and jewelry artist who lived in Mexico City in the late 1930's and early 1940's. This stunning and rare bracelet is signed with her well known and documented signature, pre eagle mark. Van Ryn was part of the expatriate group living in Mexico who was interested in Pre-Columbian culture. She worked out of Mexico City but sold to upscale New York shops and eventually moved there after her marriage to actor Walter Slezak whom she married in 1943. Her pieces are very rare as she did not work very long in jewelry and thus produced few pieces. If you love the work of the Mexican Silver Renaissance, the era of Spratling, Pineda, Castillo, Margot Van Voorhies and Aguilar, this is a bracelet to add to your collection. The bracelet is sterling and is adorned with carved alabaster panels in white and three diamond shaped green stones, either Mexican jade or dyed alabaster; I can not tell for sure, and neither can my jeweler. The diamonds are three dimensional giving them the look of a pyramid, so closely associated with Mayan culture. The bracelet measures 7 and 1/4" in length and is 1" in width where there are alabaster panels and extends to 1 and 1/4" in the panels with no cracks or repairs, amazing for its age. It obviously was treasured by its former owner and well cared for over the past 75 years or more. It is from a Kennebunkport, Maine estate that had other Mexican silver pieces from the same era.
